The Whistler and His Dog follows the Untitled: Shelf Works organization principle of paired machines according to such qualities as size, profile, gesture type or sound likeness.  The toys are chosen for the particular gesture and/or sound and the machine construction.  Each one is stripped down to the noise maker and basic mechanical parts. The Whistler and His Dog, instead of being activated by an in-line switch, is activated instead by a sound sensor that came with the toy. The work’s title is based on the name of the tune played by the toy.
