The Until drawing series accompanies Hlady’s kinetic sculpture Drop, a machine composed of paired rope-spooling and push–pull mechanisms working in concert. Its movement scores draw from key works by American choreographer Trisha Brown, whose 1970s experiments incorporated equipment to extend a dancer’s relationship to gravity.
The performing body, the sculptural body, the body as subject: just as machines break down, bodies also fail. Both Hlady’s Until drawings and kinetic work operate at the intersection of these ideas of body. While we witness “bodies” in motion in her sculpture, entropic moments are frozen in stasis in each of her graphite drawings, their contents expanding and bulging, distending their fragile casings.
